The Good
We were thoroughly impressed by the Mushroom Toast, which offered a delicious assortment of thyme-roasted garlic mushrooms, spiced cauliflower, onions, cherry tomatoes, nuts and goat’s feta. The combination was wonderfully fragrant and brought a distinctly Mediterranean character to the plate. Complemented by perfectly poached eggs, house-made hummus and sourdough, this was a wholesome and highly enjoyable brunch dish.
The Mediocre
The Beef Brisket Burger was a more ordinary affair. The brisket itself had a pleasant smoky flavour, though we would have preferred a substantial slice rather than the chopped-up meat served. Its crunchy, lightly dressed slaw was a welcome addition. Unfortunately, the accompanying chips were rather limp and disappointingly few in number.
The Bad
Nothing.
The Verdict
The Foodstore Cafe offered a very agreeable neighbourhood brunch, with the vegetable-focused Mushroom Toast undoubtedly the strongest item sampled. The brisket burger had its merits, but neither its meat preparation nor the accompanying chips quite delivered. There is enough here to warrant another visit, particularly for those drawn to hearty, carefully composed vegetarian dishes. We’d stick to the brunch menu next time.
